Educational background
Dr. Nick Nianiaris received his medical degree in 1988 from the University of Toronto, then completing an internship with St. Michael’s Hospital. His ophthalmology residency followed at the University of Toronto. He continued his training, completing a fellowship in ophthalmic research (including excimer laser studies) at Mount Sinai Hospital’s Department of Ophthalmology.
Refractive experience
As one of the leading authorities in laser vision procedures, Dr. Nianiaris has corrected the vision of eye doctors and surgeons, pilots, professional athletes, police and firefighting recruits, as well as patients from various vocations and backgrounds. Dr. Nianiaris is the medical director of TLC Laser Eye Centres’ Toronto clinic, having occupied the post since the clinic’s opening in 1994. Additionally, he is on-staff at the Michael Garron Hospital, where he regularly sees patients. He has trained extensively in laser procedures with some of the world’s foremost authorities in refractive surgery, and has performed many thousands of cataract procedures over the past 20 years. Dr. Nianiaris has experience with some of the most advanced lasers in the world and was one in the first group of surgeons around the world to be certified to use the IntraLase femtosecond laser used to make LASIK flaps.
Apart from his in-clinic duties, Dr. Nianiaris is also a lecturer at the University of Toronto’s Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Science.
Accomplishments and awards
Dr. Nianiaris has engaged in research in various areas of ophthalmology and has presented at events such as the Canadian Ophthalmological Society’s annual meeting, the Anterior Segment and Cornea Conference, as well as TLC’s annual symposia. He has been the chair of the ethics review board of TLC Toronto and is currently the only Canadian-based surgeon on TLC’s Clinical Advisory Group.
