Educational background
Dr. Clara Chan attended Stanford University in California for her undergraduate studies and received her medical degree from Queen’s University. She also attended the University of Toronto, where she completed her ophthalmology residency. Dr. Chan was selected from ophthalmologists around the world for a prestigious surgical fellowship in refractive surgery and corneal transplantation at the Cincinnati Eye Institute. Dr. Chan has extensive experience in the latest refractive surgery techniques and in some of the most advanced treatments for keratoconus.
Refractive experience
Dr. Chan is a specialist in laser vision correction as well as corneal and cataract surgeries. She is currently on staff at St. Michael’s Hospital and Toronto Western Hospital, where she trains cornea-specialist surgeons from around the world to manage complicated cases and perform advanced eye surgeries. She is also on staff at the Kensington Eye Institute.
In addition, Dr. Chan is an associate professor at the University of Toronto, and previously served as chair of the residency surgical teaching committee for the university’s Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences. Moreover, she is the president of the Canadian Cornea, External Disease and Refractive Surgery Society as well as the medical director of the Eye Bank of Canada’s Ontario Division.
With a passion for accessibility in healthcare, Dr. Chan has volunteered to provide surgical care to underprivileged patients in the Philippines as part of the St. Michael’s Hospital Urban Angels mission.
Accomplishments and awards
During Dr. Chan’s ophthalmology residency at the University of Toronto, her surgical expertise was recognized with awards for exceptional performance in cataract surgery by Mount Sinai Hospital and by the Kensington Eye Institute. She was also acknowledged with awards for clinical excellence from St. Michael’s Hospital and from the Hospital for Sick Children. The Canadian National Institute for the Blind recognized Dr. Chan as one of the top five ophthalmology residents in Canada and awarded her the E. A. Baker Scholarship to pursue post-doctoral fellowship studies. In 2015, she was awarded the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award.
Dr Chan has published over 100 papers and abstracts and has presented at conferences and meetings around the world. She is a cornea section editor for the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology and the cornea editor for EyeWorld magazine.
